The Department of Recreational Sports employs five graduate assistants – one in aquatics, one in fitness, two in intramural sports, and one in marketing.

This position is currently filled. 

General Responsibilities:  This position is a two year commitment as a full-time graduate student within the Department of Recreational Sports. This person’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to serving as an assistant to the Fitness Coordinator and Assistant Director of Fitness with the development and supervision of a comprehensive fitness/wellness program including group exercise, personal training, small group training, wellness, fitness assessment, and special events.   

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Recreation or Sport Management, Physical Education, or related field with preference given to students who have been accepted to graduate study in a Virginia Tech graduate program; group exercise instruction and personal training experience required and national certifications preferred; and aspirations towards a career in the recreational sports field. 

Stipend:  $1,418.00 monthly and tuition waiver, student comprehensive fee of $876.00 per semester is the responsibility of the student. (All Fees based on 13-14 school year with possibility of increase for 14-15 year)

General Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Intramural Sports Coordinator and Assistant Director for Intramural Sports, responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assist with planning, development, and implementation of all team, singles, and doubles sport activities and special events/programs; develop and conduct officials’ training clinics; recruit, train, schedule, and evaluate sports officials/supervisors for intramural activities in major team sports; promote and market intramural programs and activities; plan and schedule all singles/doubles activities; and assist with student payroll, budget planning, policy development, and equipment inventory/purchasing process.

Stipend: $1,442.00 monthly and tuition waiver, student comprehensive fee of $1,370.50 per semester is the responsibility of the student (All fees based on 17-18 school year with possibility of increase for 18-19 year).

Virginia Tech is currently accepting applications for the position of Marketing Graduate Assistant. This position is a full 2-year (4 semester plus summer) commitment as a full-time graduate student working as a full-time graduate student with the Department of Recreational Sport.

Under the direction of the Marketing Manager, this person’s responsibilities include: assisting with hiring, training, and supervising part-time student marketing personnel and budget management; assisting with coordination of evaluation and assessments of promotional opportunities and programs; working with marketing manager, Rec Sports program staff, and student employees/interns to coordinate on and off-site program promotions and special events; coordinating distribution of all marketing materials and cultivating relationships with targeted campus and community groups; helping develop and edit marketing materials and department website; writing press releases and promotional ads; effectively and efficiently partnering with other university departments and serve as marketing liaison on campus committees; and assisting in identifying sponsorship/partnership needs for the department and targeting/selling sponsorships as well as building, maintaining, and evaluating sponsor relationships
