Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Who can use the swimming facilities at Virginia Tech?

    McComas Recreation Center is open for VA Tech student use ONLY. War Memorial Hall is open to all VA Tech students, faculty, staff and their dependent(s) and guest(s).

  2. How long are the pools?

    Both War Memorial Pool and McComas Pool are 25 yards.

  3. How many laps is a mile?

    36 laps or 72 lengths of the pool equal a mile.

  4. Why do I need a swim bracelet before entering the pool?

    The swim bracelets help us to control the usage numbers for lifeguard to patron ratios and help us in the case of an emergency to identify a victim.

  5. What is lap swim?

    Lap swim is when the pool is open strictly for lap swimming in both the lap lanes and diving well. All LAP SWIM times are restricted to students, faculty and staff.

  6. What is recreational swim?

    Recreational swim provides lap swim in 6 lanes of the pool and open area for recreational water activities. During all RECREATIONAL SWIM times, dependents and guest under the age of 18 must be accompanied by their parent or guardian.

  7. What days are the diving boards at War Memorial Pool open?

    The diving boards are CLOSED to patrons. The dive team and dive instructional program are the only groups allowed to use the diving boards.

  8. Can my organization rent the pool for an event?

    Yes, organizations can rent the War Memorial Pool for events. The pool request form must be turned in two weeks prior to the event.

  9. Is there swim equipment I can use at the pool?

    Yes, each pool has a variety of kick boards, pull buoys, hand paddles, fins and jogging belts available to swimmers.

  10. How do I access the Virginia Tech swimming facilities?

    Access to both McComas and War Memorial Pool is through the locker rooms only.

  11. I am interested in becoming a Virginia Tech Lifeguard, what is the hiring process?

    We hire our staff of lifeguards at the beginning of the fall semester each year. If you are interested in becoming a Virginia Tech Lifeguard, we would suggest that you apply in late spring.
