2015 Day of Remembrance: 3.2-Mile Run in Remembrance

              Saturday, April 18, 2015 at 9am                                  Virginia Tech's Campus

REGISTER ONLINE

On this day, the Virginia Tech community reflects on the vibrant lives of the 32 students and faculty who were tragically taken from us on April 16, 2007. This community run/walk throughout the campus of VT strives to bring fellow Hokies together, to feel the support of the community, and to celebrate the lives of our friends and family members.

For those running 3.2 somewhere besides Blacksburg, click here and save the file to use our 2015 bib.

For those participating on Saturday, April 18, 2015, please read through the information below in order to best be prepared for the run.

  • Get your commemorative run bib available at Registration/Check-In.

  • Pick up your commemorative event shirt. Shirts will be available to the first 5,000 who registered. Any shirts that have not been picked up by 7:30 am on Saturday will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Race Picture

Be part of the “3.2” photo at 8:45 am on the Drillfield in front of the April 16 Memorial.

  • At 8:45 am members of the Corps of Cadets will hold up signs that state “Picture on Progress” to communicate when the picture is being taken from overhead. When you see these signs please make sure you are inside of the chalk “3.2” outline.

  • After the picture has been taken volunteers will change signs to “Move to start line.” At this time, please safely walk to the start line outside of War Memorial Hall. Signs will be located on the Drillfield close to War Memorial Hall.

Run Start - NEW

  • The START LINE is on Drillfield Drive in front of War Memorial Hall. Please look for volunteers holding “Wave 1, 2 or 3” signs so you know where to go.

  • There will be 3 waves that will start 3 minutes and 20 seconds apart. Wave 1 is for runners, Wave 2 is for joggers and fast walkers, and Wave 3 is for walkers and strollers. Line up in the wave that best fits you.

  • A 9:00 am, volunteers will raise a “MOMENT OF SILENCE” sign that will signal the release of 32 white balloon arch.  Please be on the lookout for when the Moment of Silence begins. After 32 seconds, the first maroon and orange balloon arch will be raised and Wave 1 will begin. After 3 minutes and 20 seconds, the second balloon arch will be raised and Wave 2 will begin. The same process will be repeated for Wave 3. That will be your only signal the event has started – there will not be any other prompt. Enjoy the run and the people around you!

Event Route

Route map

Watch for volunteers in brightly colored vests along the route – they will direct you.  Feel free to thank the volunteers along the way.  There will also be a lead golf cart for Wave 1 to follow.

  • The route includes Lane Stadium by entering through the TUNNEL that the football team enters through for every home game.  Since this does get narrow and slower, feel free to use the ALTERNATE route and bypass the stadium if you prefer.

  • IMPORTANT!!!  The football team has a scrimmage at 10:45 am.  All runners and walkers will have to use the ALTERNATE ROUTE AFTER 10:00 am.  As long as you pass the stadium by 10:00 am, you can still go through the tunnel.

  • Here is a link to view the route map: https://www.recsports.vt.edu/sites/drupal.recsports.vt.edu/files/pages/2...

Restrooms

  • Nearest restrooms to the start of the event are inside War Memorial Hall or there will be Port-a-johns located outside of War Memorial Hall on the plaza.

  • Port-a-johns will also be located by both water stations.

Water Stations

  • Water Station 1 – on Washington Street in front of the Smith Career Services Building.

  • Water Station 2 – in front of the 417 Clay Street building.

Post-Run Food

After the run, enjoy pizza, fruit, & water on the Drillfield.

  • In case of rain, we will move the post-run food inside of War Memorial Hall.

Zero Waste Event - NEW

Due to the efforts of Recreational Sports and the Office of Energy and Sustainability, along with the commitment of the local community and the idea of a Virginia Tech student, the 3.2 Run in Remembrance on April 18 is designed to be a “zero waste” event.

  • Compost bins will be situated throughout the 3.2 Run in Remembrance course for paper towels, pizza boxes, and food. Coke is donating 10,000 bottles of water; those bottles and water station cups can be discarded in recycle bins.

Inclement Weather

The event will take place rain or shine. In case of inclement weather, check www.vt.edu for announcements about all of the Day of Remembrance activities and updates.

We also want to thank all of our volunteers that help us put on such an important event for the Hokie community. It takes over 400 volunteers to complete this run and we could not do it without them. If you see a volunteer during the event, please take a second and thank them for allowing this event to occur.

8 Year Anniversary
As the eighth anniversary of the April 16, 2007 tragedy approaches, we are reminded that anniversaries often are accompanied by challenges. Students, staff, faculty, and other members of the Virginia Tech community, whether they were on campus or not, may find themselves confronted with unexpected feelings or memories that they may have thought were resolved or in the past. Although we have seen many examples of how our campus community has been resilient and many people will not need support on or around the Day of Remembrance, there will be services available for anyone who needs or wants to speak with a counselor. Visit the Day of Remembrance website for more details.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support Virginia Tech for the 2014 3.2 for 32 Remembrance Run/Walk. We had over 10,000 people.
