Cathy joined the Department of Recreational Sports in June 2004. She is an active member of the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA), serving as the chairperson for the NIRSA National Marketing Institute for the past four years and as a judge for the Creative Excellence Awards committee. Cathy is also a member of the College Communicators Association of Virginia and the District of Columbia (CCA). Before becoming a Hokie, Cathy worked for ten years in sports management as the area manager of guest services at Disney’s Wide World of Sports and as director of publications and ticket sales for the former New York Yankees’ Double-A teams - the Norwich Navigators and the Albany-Colonie Yankees. She also worked for the New York Islanders' AHL hockey teams - the Capital District Islands and the Albany RiverRats as a statistician. Cathy received her undergraduate degree in Physical Education/Sport Management from the State University of New York College at Cortland in 1992. In April 2002, Cathy and her husband Chad relocated to his hometown of Salem, VA to be closer to family. Cathy is certified in CPR and First Aid and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Health Promotion at Virginia Tech. In 2009, Ali and co-worker Cathy Kropff received the 2008-2009 DSA Partnership Award for their work on the first 3.2 Mile Run in Remembrance event. In her spare time, she enjoys racquetball, volleyball, reading and spending time with family and friends.
