Chris has been with the university since 1987 serving in various roles for the Department of Recreational Sports. He was named the Director of Recreational Sports in July 2007. As director, Chris provides leadership to a comprehensive department with 35 full-time employees and 300 student employees and a budget of $5 million annually. Prior to being named director, he served the department as the associate director for eight years and spent three years as the assistant director for programs. Chris began his professional career at Virginia Tech spending seven years as an intramural coordinator. He has also spent time as the coordinator of club sports and as a facility manager. Chris first came to Virginia Tech as a graduate assistant within the intramural sports program while he obtained his master’s degree in Sports Management. He received his undergraduate degree in Physical Education from Newberry College, South Carolina, where he was a member of the football team.
Chris is an active member of the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA). He is a graduate of the NIRSA School of Recreational Sports Management (1999) and the NIRSA Executive Institute (2002). Under his guidance, Virginia Tech hosted the NIRSA Region II Conference in Roanoke (2001) and two Virginia State Workshops (1989, 1996). He also served a two year term as the Virginia State Director.
As an avid supporter of youth sports and the opportunities and life lessons they provide, Chris serves on the Board of Directors of the New River United Soccer Association and is involved with the Blacksburg Baseball Association. He has also served as a youth coach for the Blacksburg Parks and Recreation programs and provides leadership for youth sports tournament organizations and execution. Chris also serves on the Board of Directors for the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech, is a fellow of the 2002 Academy for Leadership Excellence at Virginia Tech, and has been the public address announcer for Virginia Tech Women’s Basketball since 2000.
Although he is passionate about the field of sports and recreation, Chris’s main passion is his family. He enjoys spending time with his wife Barbara and his sons Carson and Camden. He also enjoys traveling and playing golf when time allows.
