Membership and Guest Access

Cycle class

Recreational Sports offers a variety of membership options to various campus community groups to help meet fitness needs!

All Virginia Tech full and part time enrolled undergraduate and graduate students who pay the recreation fee in the comprehensive fees of their tuition have access to use McComas Hall and the Rec Sports Field House during normal operational hours. If a student is not enrolled in classes during any given semester and has not yet graduated, they can pay the recreation fee per semester via our online portal to gain access to McComas gym and the Rec Sports Field House. Incoming students who have not yet started classes do not qualify to purchase membership access.

Membership rates for the students who are not enrolled are as follows:

  • Single Semester Rate (Fall or Spring): $187
  • Single Summer Session (Session I or Session II): $70.13
  • Summer Semester (sessions I&II): $140.25

Free 30-Day McComas Trial

All employees have access to try out McComas gym for one (1) free, 30-day period during their time on staff at Virginia Tech. Free trial memberships can be started anytime and during any point of their employment. McComas gym free trials include a 30-day all-access membership to the facility, free group exercise classes, and free towel service. If you are interested in starting your free trial or would like more information, please email recsports@vt.edu.

Early Bird Membership

This membership option allows access to McComas gym and the Rec Sports Field House from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday-Friday, in addition to full access on the weekends. Early Bird memberships are set up to prorate in our system. As the semester goes on, the cheaper the memberships become.

Rates for the early bird membership are as follows:

  • Single Semester Rate (Fall or Spring): $56
  • Summer Semester (sessions I&II): $42
  • Annual (Fall, Spring, Summer I&II) Rate: $112

Early Bird memberships can be purchased online any time or in person during normal business hours at the Recreational Sports Business Office in McComas Hall. All fitness classes, intramural sports, Venture Out trips, etc. have extra associated costs in order to participate. All Access Membership

This membership option allows access to McComas gym and the Rec Sports Field House during normal operational hours on weekdays and weekends. All Access memberships are set up to prorate in our system. As the semester goes on, the cheaper the memberships become.

Payroll Deduction Options

Payroll deduction is available on all Early Bird and All Access memberships for the semester. Payroll deduction memberships can be purchased online or in person at the Recreational Sports check-in desk in McComas Hall. Payroll deduction is only available to full-time employees and you must enroll by the the deadline each semester in order to qualify. At the time of sale, all payroll deduction memberships will show a cost of $0. Please note that the full amount of the membership will be taken out in increments each pay period over the course of the semester the membership is intended for. If you have any questions about payroll deduction and enrollment deadlines, please email recsports@vt.edu. After the enrollment deadline each semester, you cannot pursue a payroll deduction membership or reverse/refund your payroll deduction enrollment.

Spouse/partner guests of current Virginia Tech employees, retirees, and students are eligible to purchase a membership with VT Rec Sports. In order to qualify, all spouse/partner candidates must be 18 years or older and be able to provide proper documentation that they reside at the same address of their sponsor. Please note that a verified spouse/partner candidate is able to purchase a membership regardless of if their sponsor is a paying member. On an annual basis, sponsors will be contacted via email about continuing their spouse/partner’s status in our system. Only one spouse/partner member will be granted per valid Virginia Tech sponsor. In order to apply for verification, all spouse/partner candidates and sponsors must follow these steps:

  1. The Virginia Tech sponsor and spouse/partner candidate must come to the VT Rec Sports administrative office in 142 McComas Hall during normal business hours to start the application process. 
  2. The sponsor and candidate will complete the appropriate registration forms and verification process with a Recreational Sports staff member, which indicates that the sponsor assumes full financial and legal responsibility for their spouse/partner member once their access is granted. An official document with both names and the same address must be presented OR two documents (one for each individual) may be used as long as they both reference the same address. Acceptable documents include a residential lease, utility bills, bank statement, or driver's license (or other office identification card) bearing the applicant’s full name and address.
  3. At the end of the application process, an identification badge and online account credentials will be issued to the spouse/partner member. Issued ID badge must be picked up in the VT Rec Sports administrative office.
  4. An ID badge will be provided to any new member. If for any reason a replacement ID badge is needed the cost of a new badge will be $10.

Virginia Tech alumni are eligible to purchase a membership with VT Rec Sports. In order to qualify, all alumni who apply must have received an undergraduate or graduate degree from Virginia Tech. Those who did not complete any degree will not be considered for membership.

Due to the limited capacity that both McComas Hall and the Rec Sports Field House operate with during the regular academic year, we are unable to extend membership options to this group during the fall and/or spring semesters. In order to apply for verification, each alumni candidate must follow these steps:

  1. The Virginia Tech alumni candidate must come to the VT Rec Sports administrative office in 142 McComas Hall during normal business hours to start the application process.
  2. The alumni will complete the appropriate registration forms and verification process with a Recreational Sports staff member. Verification of alumni status will be completed during the application process, but each alumni candidate will be asked to share their previous student ID number/identification card and a photo ID during the application process. During this time, an identification badge and online account credentials will be issued to alumni, and a membership can be purchased as well. Issued ID badge must be picked up in VT Rec Sports administrative office.
  3. An ID badge will be provided to any new member. If for any reason a replacement ID badge is needed the cost of a new badge will be $10.

Alumni members are eligible to purchase the following memberships once verified:

Alumni Early Bird Membership

This membership option allows access to McComas gym and the Rec Sports Field House from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday-Friday, in addition to full access on the weekends. Early Bird memberships are set up to prorate in our system. As the semester goes on, the cheaper the memberships become.

  • Summer Semester (sessions I&II): $42

Due to the limited capacity that both McComas Hall and the Rec Sports Field House operate with during the regular academic year, we are unable to extend membership options to this group during the fall and/or spring semesters. Please email recsports@vt.edu if you have any questions.

Dependents of current Virginia Tech employees, retirees, and students are eligible for access with VT Rec Sports. On an annual basis, sponsors will be contacted via email about continuing their dependent(s) status in our system. If you have any questions about this information, please email recsports@vt.edu for assistance!

In order to apply for verification, all dependants 18+ years of age must follow these steps:

  1. The sponsor and the 18+ dependent candidate must come to the VT Rec Sports administrative office in 142 McComas Hall during normal business hours to start the application process.
  2. The sponsor and candidate will complete the appropriate registration forms and verification process with a Recreational Sports staff member, which indicates that the sponsor assumes full financial and legal responsibility for their 18+ dependent once their access is granted. Each dependent candidate will be asked to bring a photo ID during the application process. During this time, an identification badge and online account credentials will be issued to the dependents, and a membership can be purchased as well. Issued ID badge must be picked up in VT Rec Sports administrative office.

  1. On behalf of the minor dependent candidate(s), the Virginia Tech sponsor must come to the VT Rec Sports administrative office in 142 McComas Hall during normal business hours to start the application process.
  2. The sponsor for minor dependent candidate(s) will complete the appropriate registration forms and verification process with a Recreational Sports staff member, which indicates that the sponsor assumes full financial and legal responsibility for their dependent(s) once their access is granted. During this time, an identification badge will be issued for the verified dependent(s) and automatic, free access to the facility will be added to dependent’s profile.Issued ID badge must be picked up in VT Rec Sports administrative office.
  3. A one time $10 admin fee will be charged for the creation of an ID badge for each dependent.
Minor Dependent Member Policies for Access:
  • During regular academic semesters (fall and spring semesters), verified dependents that are minors will only be able to use the facilities during normal operational hours on the weekends (Saturday and Sunday)

  • During summer sessions and university breaks, verified dependents that are minors will be able to use the facility during normal operational hours during the week (Monday-Sunday)

  • Their sponsor must have a valid membership to VT Rec Sports indoor facilities, as any verified dependent that is a minor is not allowed to use our facilities at any time unsupervised without their sponsor.

  • Dependants under 18 years of age may attend open recreation swim times only when accompanied by parent or legal guardian. Children that cannot swim must be within arms length of parent or guardian.

Due to the limited capacity that both McComas Hall and the Rec Sports Field House are currently operating under, we are unable to extend access options and/or membership to this group until further notice. Please email recsports@vt.edu if you have any questions.

Daily guests of current Virginia Tech employees, retirees, and students are eligible for 24-hour daily pass access with VT Rec Sports. In order to qualify, all daily guests must be 18 years or older and be sponsored by a current VT employee, retiree or student who has valid membership to all VT Rec Sports indoor facilities. Please note that sponsors assume full financial and legal responsibility for their daily guest once their access is granted. In order to move forward with a daily guest pass, all guests and sponsors must follow these steps:

  1. The daily guest and their sponsor should visit the VT Rec Sports welcome desk at McComas Hall gym during normal operational hours and sign a waiver to start the process of purchasing a guest pass.
  2. Daily guest passes are $10 per person for each 24-hour period and can be purchased at any point during normal operational hours of McComas Hall gym. Credit/debit card and Hokie Passport payments are the only forms of payment accepted for guest passes.
  3. Once access is issued, the daily guest must bring their issued receipt/pass during each visit throughout their 24-hour period of access to be checked in.

Daily Guest Policies for Access:

  • Once purchased, daily passes are good for use in McComas Hall gym and the Rec Sports Field House but must be purchased in person at McComas Hall gym before access is granted.

  • The daily guest must have a picture ID with them during each visit to the facility throughout their 24-hour period of access.

  • The sponsor can have more than one guest, but each guest will need to pay the fee and sign a waiver.

  • The sponsor must be in the facility with daily guest during each visit throughout their 24-hour period of access after pass is purchased.

Conference and Guest Services attendees that are contracted through the VT Conference and Guest Services office are eligible to purchase a membership with VT Rec Sports. If you have any questions about this information, please email recsports@vt.edu for assistance!

Valid membership to VT Rec Sports facilities includes access to both indoor gym facilities on campus, McComas Hall gym and the Rec Sports Field House, as well as unlimited use of various outdoor recreational facilities that VT Rec Sports oversees. *All Conference and Guest Services attendees who are interested in purchasing a membership must be 18+ years of age to access our facilities.

In order for VT Conference and Guest Services attendees to move forward with a membership, please follow these steps:

  1. Check with your program director to see if gym membership needs to be paid on an individual basis or is budgeted through your program. If it is budgeted through your program for the entire group, the program director should reach out to recsports@vt.edu with the following information:
    • Program or organization name
    • Department name
    • Contact name and email
    • Access dates
  2. If membership will be purchased on an individual basis, each VT Conference and Guest Services attendee should visit the VT Rec Sports administrative office in 142 McComas Hall during normal business hours with their issued ID/access card to purchase access.

VT Conference and Guest Services attendees members are eligible to purchase the following memberships:

  • Day Rate: $10/per person

  • Weekend Rate (Friday, Saturday, + Sunday): $15/per person

  • Weekly Rate (Monday-Sunday): $20/per person

  • 3-4 Weeks/Full Semester Rate: $55/per person
  • 5+ Weeks: Pro-Rate All Access Membership

 

 

Refund Policy

All sales are final. Partial refunds will only be issued (subject to an administrative fee) if medical documentation is provided by a physician stating the participant can no longer continue in physical activity.
