Important Aquatics Information
What ages do you offer private swim lessons for?
We offer private swim lessons for children ages 3 and up, including teens and adults. Each lesson is personalized to match the swimmer’s age, comfort level, and goals.
Do I need to know how to swim before taking private lessons?
Not at all! Private lessons are ideal for beginners. Whether you’re brand new to the water or want to build confidence, we start at your comfort level and progress at a pace that works for you.
What is the difference between private and group swim lessons?
We only offer one-on-one private lessons, which means your instructor’s full attention is on you or your child. This allows for faster progress, customized instruction, and a more comfortable learning environment—especially for beginners or nervous swimmers.
How long is each private swim lesson?
Each private swim lesson is 30 minutes long. This length is ideal for maintaining focus and energy, especially for younger swimmers.
How many lessons will I need to learn how to swim?
The number of lessons varies depending on your current skill level, water comfort, and personal goals. Some swimmers may see progress quickly, while others benefit from ongoing instruction. We’ll create a personalized plan and adjust as you grow more confident in the water.
Can adults take private swim lessons too?
Yes! We welcome adult swimmers of all levels. Whether you’re learning to swim for the first time, improving your technique, or overcoming fear of the water, private lessons are a great option.
Am I allowed to work out while my child is in lessons?
We ask that you remain in the designated observation area during lessons. In the case that there is an emergency or if your child needs you, we want to ensure that we can find you quickly and unite you with your child in a timely manner.
Where can I park for lessons?
With questions regarding parking, please visit Parking and Transportation website.
In the case of an emergency situation during swim lessons, please follow this protocol:
For an in-water emergency:
Step 1: Remain calm
Step 2: The lifeguards will blow their whistle signaling all participants to get out of the pool
Step 3: Parents gather at the double door entrance of the pool
Step 4: The Head Swim Instructor will call classes over one at a time starting with Preschool Level 1
Step 5: Reunite with your child and exit through the locker room
For a fire emergency:
Step 1: Remain calm
Step 2: Exit the facility through the closest door – Participants and instructors will exit to the outside from the pool deck
Step 3: Reunite with your child in the grassy area near the traffic circle in front of McComas – For a visual, please see the map
For safety and security reasons, it is important that parents/guardians remain in the observation area at all times during lessons
If for any reason you must cancel/reschedule your lessons due to illness or scheduling conflict after you have confirmed your lessons, you will be allowed ONE reschedule per set of lessons (TWO for 12 lesson package); however, we must be notified prior to 4 pm on the day of the lesson (2pm on Friday and 3pm on Sunday). Our preferred method of communication is email, but phone calls are acceptable. After this, any remaining lessons that need to be rescheduled will be forfeited unless it is a medical or family emergency that will be determined based on our discretion.
If for any reason you do not show up for your lesson without notice, you will forfeit that lesson and will not be allowed to reschedule. If you are late for your lesson, you will not be able to extend your lesson end time.
In case of an emergency, immediately contact aquatics@vt.edu. The decision on whether the lesson will result in rescheduling or forfeiting will be at the discretion of the Aquatics lead team.
