Senior Stories: Brogan Dineen

The amount of hours Brogan Dineen has spent in the McComas pool is unlike most college students. Stepping onto the Virginia Tech campus and stepping into a lifeguard position with Rec Sports her freshman year were almost one in the same. Now, about to graduate, Dineen cherishes her time spent with the Aquatics Department of Rec Sports. 

“[My favorite memory] really has to be all the friends and relationships I’ve made here. I spent my whole first weekend freshman year at the pool getting a recertification,” Dineen said, “I met some of my first and longest friends at Tech there. They really took me under their wing and gave me so much great advice during my first week of classes.” 

Taking on a job as a freshman is not an easy task, but Dineen can’t imagine her college experience without it. 

“[My job with Rec Sports] has been super pivotal [to my college experience]. I have spent so much time in this pool and made so many friends and formed a great bond with my boss. It gave me a sense of responsibility, even as a young freshman. It also gave me a sense of responsibility knowing that I am a part of what makes Virginia Tech one of the most active campuses in the world. It made me really happy to be a part of that.” 

There are so many life skills you learn from any job, especially one you have held for four full years. Dineen will be walking out of the McComas pool a head and heart full of great advice. 

“Make friends with your coworkers, it makes [your job] so much easier and more enjoyable to go to work every day. And just have fun with it. Don’t do a job that you don’t enjoy or work in a facility that you don’t want to spend a ton of time in. Pick something that is really true to you and really makes you happy.”

Dineen will graduate in May and will be working at MetLife up in New Jersey.
