McComas' summer pilot reopening has allowed the Rec Sports team to gain a new perspective for fall preparedness in the era of COVID-19.

For a portion of the summer months, on-campus residents and existing employee members were provided facility access to allow testing of procedural and safety modifications. The operation relied on a heavy dose of creativity from our pro staff, who have willingly taken shifts at the front desk, weight room, pool, and as group exercise instructors in the absence of student employees.

"This summer has been wild for everyone," said Jeff Feldhaus, Assistant Director for Intramural Sports. "We've done a lot to prepare for the upcoming semester but we still have so much more to do. So, I think it highlights the importance of teamwork, trusting others, and creating buy-in when you have a common goal."

For some staff members, the added duties have provided a boosted sense of community amidst these times of physical distancing.

Fitness GA Becky Eacho said, "I've enjoyed getting to see the other professional staff members and graduate assistants that I haven't been able to see in a while due to working from home. It was nice to catch up with everyone and see how they're doing."

The teamwork and service ethic demonstrated by staff has been unparalleled. On any given shift, for example, participants may be greeted by Rec Sports' Director Ali Cross as she works her shift at the front desk.

"I always tell our students I wouldn't ask them to do something that I haven't done," said Facility Manager Curtis Sink. "It sets the tone for our department's work ethic to see leaders create extra time in their schedules to work in the facility."

The opportunity to test protocols prior to the return of the fall semester has been crucial to the preparedness of Rec Sports' operation. It has also given staff an enhanced perspective of empathy and respect for the student staff who make the operation run so smoothly.

"I have always appreciated the work our students do but I think from time to time, we all forget every job has its less-glamorous duties," said Feldhaus. "So, I think for me it just reinforces the fact that it really means something to someone when you take the time to be friendly, say please and thank you, or offer a smile. And oh yeah, please flush and wash your hands."

The summer pilot program will conclude August 7th and McComas will reopen for the fall semester on the 18th.
